    Greg Hannon's Seminar

Great talk! Big guys always can make very complicated system simple and summarize relatively coherent trends from tons of the data.

2009 Noble prize for Medicine and Physiology

Telomerase and telomere, I mentioned earlier this year in a post, is the subject for noble prize of this year. It is much much (way) better than the last year's ridicules item. Telomerase and telomere, universal to most eukaryotic organisms (all higher eukaryotes), protect the ends of chromosomes and are the one of the main determinants of the life span. With the abnormal activity, the cancer cells have almost forever active telomerase to keep the cancer cells dividing without any restrains. It is a real physiological advanced knowledge for understanding our lifes.

"Wake me up, when September comes"

。。。。。sigh

    Rustbelt meeting

Our lab will all come this year, after absent for two years. I will give an oral presentation this year and my labmate will have a poster (the third version of the same project for him ^-^). Probably this will be my last time to summarize my work in public before graduation. I still remembered that I went to the meeting three years ago. I had no data at that time and was sort of depressed by the slow progress. I also remembered that the two best presentation winners in that year published well: one in Science, one in PNAS. The guy with PNAS publication was a first year graduate student, but so skillful for talking and presented beautiful data. BTW: I just learnt the meaning of the "rustbelt": it reflects the auto industry in the midwest and northeastern parts of the US.

    Days in Vancouver--Day 6

This was a treffic day. I finished all my dream tour plan.

In the mornigng, I went to Stanley Park. The park is an island with beautiful view of the sea and mountain. We walked around it and enjoyed a lot. I went very close to the sea water. There are many many crabs, all are little cute. They fight to each other, and moved very fast. There is a wetland reserved area, suppose that tourists can see beavers-- in dark but not daytime. We did see one racoon, but not even as cute as the three I saw on campus. Trail in the park is no longer free, but $2 per day is reasonable.

Time is enough, so we went to grouse mountain. About an hour one can climb to the top, but we five people are all lazy bones, so we just went to the seatlift to the top. Five minutes, easy and confortable, we arrived on the top of the mountain. It is similar to the great mountains in China, except here you can see ocean as well. The 2010 olympics games will be there, we saw several constructions. As part of the construction projects, there are more seatlifts, and free on mountain. We really saw awesome scene. You can imagine on the top of a big mountain, you are facing tremondous huge ocean in front of you, and the top of the snow mountain hiding in the clouds at your back. I got say Vancouver people are so lucky. I am so  impressed by the nature.

At night we enjoyed mexican food again, I had a nice magarita.

Now I am in YVR airport, heading back. Wonderful trip!

    Days in Vancouver--Day 5

I saw three racoons on campus, quite cute.

The last talk about plant virus ends at 10:20 pm, so we had plenty of time heading to the downtown.

We happened to have Simon's group from Marryland joined us to Chinatown. We found a very nice dim-sum brunch. It was so great, very authentic, and turned out to be quite cheap. Everyone was satisfacted. I heard many things about the plant virus field these days, I guess goship is really part of the meeting. This Chinatown was the most neat one I have ever been, and has a very authentic royal garden style park. We spent quite sometime there. I had some nice present for Bin now. : )

There was one workshop for writing, papers. It is something nice, but without extensive practising, no magic will happen. The slides were supposed to be available online, so people can download from the asv2009 meeting homepage.

Fred Sack took our lab to dinner, with a rising star in the plant-pathogen interaction field, Dr. Li, Xin. Turned out Xin's lab had one more plant cell being acceoted today, quite nice. We went to the the best restaurant in town (新瑞华). The food was amazingly good, it was too bad that I was still too full from the lunch...... They all were teasing me not eating much, even the waiter......We tried some recommended dishes, I love the apetizer best.

We missed dancing and banquet, since the tickets are way beyond our badget (60 dollars). So far everything went on well. Tomorrow I will go to stanley park.

    Days in Vancouver--Day 4

I had a terrible dream, so I woke up at 4:00 pm.

It gets fucking cold, I almost caught cold here. In the morning, I want to the beach again, it is empty, I had a many beautiful pics then. Our lab met the dean of botany in UBC, Dr. Fred Sack, who used to be the dean of our department. We walked around the whole department. I heard that the king of Japanese was traveling in UBC today, but I missed that. Some of my friends were so close that they took very clear pictures.

In the afternoon, I heard the second part of the plant virus talks. It is sort of boring, nothing really exciting. Everyone in the field is so desperated. Too bad! There is one talk about algae virus from Japan was quite amuzing, that was the only few highlights. I do not think I will go to ASV meeting any longer because I do not feel belonging to the group.

The night we went to the other state-of-the -art-speaker talk from Ohio State, Kathy's talk. Quite nice. This time Ohio State is so well-represented.

In the social and poster session, we set up collaboration with a Canadian group, hopefully it will lead to unreveal the cause of the viroid pathogenicity.

    Days in Vancouver--Day 3

I had a nice sleep last night. The weather changed a lot today, becoming cool.

In the morning, I locked myself in the room to practice. It is an old stuff, so not much problem, I just need to control my flow.

Lunch with plant virus group: I understand that there are some people around but did not show up, like my boss. However, there are only about thirty people in the lunch compared the 1,300 attendence for this ASV meeting, how pathetic.!

Plant session I went well, and I did learnt many new concepts about virus, but seriously, virology is never of my real interests. My talk was OK, and I only got one technical question. My boss gave the state-of-the-art-speaker talk in the afternoon. It was good except he happened recorded his practice minutes and the sides went on out of control. I think there are only three viroid group showed up here, and we had a nice talk with one of them That lady was also a graduate student. She did many great job for chloroplast viroids. I wish she could consider our lab as her postdoc choice. She even offered me a cooperation to help me identify my candidate protein binding site on viroid., which will save me a lot of time and contributes tremedously to the whole project in a really long term. I really appreciate that. I thought about that for a long while, but the protein-protected digestion essay is too difficult to be applied to a huge RNA.

Well, that is it. The meeting is sort of done for me. I will visit botanical garden tomorrow.

    Days in Vancouver-- Day2

,It is a little bit too hot for Vancouver: almost 30 degree.

What did I do? In the morning, I picked up my travel grant check, but I could not find any place for breakfast. I woke up at 5:30 am and did not eat anything till 8:30. I met many osuers in the starbucks, so we decided to take a tour in campus. We went to another beach, and we found there almost all naked people...... I seriously suspect that UBC beaches are all nude beaches.

Back from the beach, I saw a message from boss saying he delayed the plan to Chinatown. All right, so I played soccer with some primary school kids on campus. I am too old to catch up with their elegant actions now.

Seriously, since then I felt so sleepy. I stayed in bed from 11:00 am till 2:30 pm. I could not really sleep but I just felt so tired and sleepy. I hate jet-lag!!! I am so a circadian resistent mutant. I went to the SUB for something to eat and then almost slept from the keynote address (5:00 pm) till now (9:00 pm). I cannot wait till the end of virus ecology section. I have to get a rest now, since I am going to have an oral presentation tomorrow. I am just a little bit regreting not take my awesome laser pointer with me since I saw a lady trying to jump to point to her data with a non-functioning pointer in virus ecology section.

I just noticed that I am walking along the agricultural road everyday on campus, I am so bona-fide a peasent.

    Days in Vancouver-- Day 1

We (I and the Japanese graduate student in the lab, Ryuta) happened to book the same flight as our boss, so we headed to

Vancouver together for American Society of Virology 2009 meeting. My boss is one of the five state-of-the-art speakers of this year, the only one from plant virology field.

I hated the flight in these days because of no food. I had a lot of soybars, but feel uneasy. Drinks made me dizzy, no matter

juice, coke water or coffee. About four hours flight from Chicago, we arrived at 3:00 pm. I have to say that YVR is the best

(I mean, the best) airport I have ever been to in my life (I really did not prepare to see such an art). In the airport there is a faked

birds garden that mimics the environment of the Vancouver area, and a big water fall demonstrates the history of the American

    Indian culture.

We took taxi to UBC. The city is nice, but I was not that impressed. I checked in to my room: one person, windows facing to

pacific ocean about 500 meters away. Beautiful? So damn true. But also too noisy!!! I cannot image in summer

there are so many cars: Ohio State campus is so quiet in summer.

Boss was so hungry that we took bus to downtown for dinner. In Vancouver, the bus will not return changes, so we bought

bus ticket booklets (ten tickets together). Also, in such a huge city in the Great White North, there are few buses equipped

with airconditions. No wonder US people always make fun of the Canadian people were like living in two decades behind.

We do not know where to stop, so we just got out of the bus when we smelled some fantastic food. We picked a Mexican

Restaurant out of many sushi bars, and it happened to be recommended by the ASV organizers. The food beats all the

Mexican food I ever had (the one in Ohio University was close enough to the taste).

We came back after dinner with satisfaction and check in for the meeting. Funny thing is: our state-of-the-art boss forgot to register it...... I and Ryuta were like "hahaha".

We walked around the campus to try to adjust to the local time zone. It is a beautiful campus because you can see great

grouse mountain and even snow mountains while with quiet and clean pacific. We walked through rose garden and tried

to reach any beach for sunset. En, I have to say that we found the nude beach so easily and casually on the first day. It is

one of top famous nude beaches in north America and supposed to be in a secret place. It is really buried in a small forest,

and we saw the sign saying clothing optional behind. Ryuta and my boss were so excited to see such a famous place so I

just followed. To my surprise, we had to walk a long way to reach the beach, and I only saw a naked old men....... It is so

beautiful there. We just sit on the big drifts,  talked about science and waited for the sunset. Poor Ryuta: he was so focused

to hear the scientific discussion that he missed the sunset moment. Mountains, pacific ocean and sunset, that's my first day

here, the only thing is I forgot to take my camera with me and left at the dorm....... I went to my dorm alone after that since

my boss and Ryuta lived in the center of the campus. Shamefully, I got lost. I was so tired and sleepy that I even did not want

to check the map on hand. Luckily, I saw a friend from Kentucky Univ. I figured out he lived in the same building, so we went

back together. You know, except my lab people (boss and Ryuta), he was the only person from plant virology field I met in my

first day here. No wonder my boss said that plant virology people are just the tiny decoration of the ASV and just for showing

the diversity and harmony of the virology society.

Boss asked me to check the best Chinese restaurant in town and we will head for it in the second day. And now, I wake up at

5:30 am local time due to the jet-lag and noise from outside......
